Our talented Ama Ghar brother, Ashok, made this video to commemorate the visit of some European volunteers – his video brings alive some of the fun activities the kids did with the visiting girls, and makes it crystal clear how much the volunteers bonded with both children and staff. I especially love the sequence at the end when Antonia says …
A New Member of the Family
Because of the fact that we were formerly in a crowded rental house and because there was a long process of construction on our new home, we have been waiting to take in more children. But this week we were able to welcome a new member into our Ama Ghar family – a little 5 1/2 year old girl named Pooja. Pooja’s father …
Fireflies and New Friends
Our beloved volunteer and friend, Anna-Marie Nilsson, joined us again last month at Ama Ghar. A teacher in the Bay Area, she brought along five students – Amara Plaza-Jennings, Sasha Marie Ward, Lauren Boranian, Suzanne Abbey and Sarah Atkinson – who had the adventure of their lives in Nepal! They fell in love with the Ama Ghar kids (it was …
Meet Sanu Laxmi – she's small but mighty!
Sanu Laxmi means “little Laxmi” in Nepali… because Laxmi has a big Ama Ghar sister with the same name (Tula Laxmi). But there’s nothing little about our Laxmi – she’s a dynamo! Here’s what her sister Rupa had to say about her… “Laxmi’s favorite game is badminton. She likes to play with dolls. Her hobby is swimming. Her aim is …

Ashok and Sajan passed with Distinction, and all five of the girls passed in First Division. These are excellent marks on everyone’s part, and …
These Kids Work Hard!
Although the children of Ama Ghar work hard at school and athletics, they also are exceptional in their willingness to work hard to help finish their new home. They have painted walls and doors, created art projects to decorate the rooms, painted their beds and helped Uma to sew up new cushions. And now they’re busy finishing up our outdoor …
Buddha's Birthday at Ama Ghar
Buddha’s birthday is generally celebrated in May – dates vary across Asia. As a gift to Buddha on his birthday, we decorated our new stupa with flowers. Pictured here: our Administrator and House Father, Bhesh, celebrates Buddha’s birthday at the stupa with some of the Ama Ghar kids and their curious new puppy.

A Cultural Lesson for the Ama Ghar Artists
Thought you’d enjoy this photo of some of the older children learning more about Newari culture! Bonnie took Ama Ghar’s five best artists to an art exhibit in Kathmandu, highlighting ancient Newari art. Newars are the majority people of the Kathmandu Valley, and they have a wonderful tradition of visual arts, including painting and carving. This particular show was of religious …
