Dashain is the biggest, longest and most auspicious festival of the year in Nepal, celebrated by everyone. During the 15 days of celebration, no one works, and the goddess Durga in all her manifestations is worshiped with special pujas and tika ceremonies.

Maya, Pooja, Badi Ram, Niru and Akchar show off their new clothes, made by their big sister Srijana, who is studying clothing design in Kathmandu.

In preparation for Dashain every home is cleaned thoroughly and beautifully decorated, painted as an invitation to the goddess, so that she may visit and bless with house with good fortune. Everyone in the family gets new clothes and a gift of cash.

Badi Ram and Pooja enjoy some family time with their big sister Krishna, who is studying at Kantipur Dental College in Pokhara.

Dashain is the time for families to be together. Some of the Ama Ghar children have relatives living in other areas, so they spend Dashain with that family. But for all of us, Ama Ghar is our family – the older children who have left the house and are working or at university come back and spend the holidays at Ama Ghar. It’s wonderful to see them, and they enjoy playing and bonding with the little ones.

Sabita, Rama, Rupmala, Manisha, Krishna, Ganga, Biratjian, Sandesh and Akshay all came home from their work or studies to spend Dashain with their Ama Ghar family.

Happy Dashain to all – wishing you a happy, healthy, auspicious year from your Ama Ghar family.
