Our beloved volunteer and friend, Anna-Marie Nilsson, joined us again last month at Ama Ghar. A teacher in the Bay Area, she brought along five students – Amara Plaza-Jennings, Sasha Marie Ward, Lauren Boranian, Suzanne Abbey and Sarah Atkinson – who had the adventure of their lives in Nepal! They fell in love with the Ama Ghar kids (it was mutual), participated in our big SLC celebration (more on this later), made tie dye tee shirts and were accompanied home to their guest apartment by fireflies.
The volunteers used the proceeds from a candy sale that they held in the U.S. to open bank accounts for each of our 7 students who passed their SLC exams – thank you so much, girls. They also visited the ancient city of Bakhtapur, which was their favorite locale. Here is an excerpt from from Anna-Marie’s Nepal journal:
“We have fire flies lining the road as we walk home at night. One actually got stuck in our room! Boy do they ever make a brilliant light!
Cute story: we needed a glue concoction for one of our projects at Ama Ghar and asked for flour in water. The eager child we were working with brought us a bowl with a daisy floating in it. I love Nepal.”
